The 2021 Château Haut-Brion offers a captivating bouquet and a palate of finesse, balance, and complexity. A true masterpiece from an iconic winery.
Hand harvested grapes aged in French oak (73% new)
Château Haut-Brion is one of the 4 original 1st growth Bordeauxs from the Classification of 1855, and actually the only one not in the Médoc region of Bordeaux. With wine production records dating back to 1521, Haut-Brion is the oldest continuously working winery in Bordeaux and the only one of the now 5 1855 Premier Grand Cru Classé wines named after the terroir in which the grapes were grown versus a family or village name. It also differs in the blend in that Merlot is more than half the blend (much like Bordeaux's Right Bank cousin), where the other 4 are very Cabernet Sauvignon heavy. Make no mistake, though, this is a powerful full-bodied wine that delivers every bit as much elegance, beauty, and complexity as the other 4 1st growths.
The solid and serious structure of this wine is reflected in the wood aromas and spice from wood aging. It is dense, packed with tannins at the core, and its concentration gives a dry character to the wine. Ready to drink from 2028.
The 2021 Haut-Brion confirms its fine showing en primeur, cementing its status as one of the wines of the vintage. Its complex bouquet of dark berries and cassis mingled with notions of cigar wrapper and burning embers unfurls in the glass. Full-bodied, deep and velvety, it’s concentrated and layered with a multidimensional core of fruit, sweet tannins and lively acids, concluding with a long, penetrating finish. Reflecting the timeless elegance of Haut-Brions from cooler years, the 2021 will delight Bordeaux purists.
