A world class, powerful, elegant, and complex Merlot-dominant Bordeau.
Hand harvested grapes are aged 18 months in French oak barrels (55% new) and foudre
What an unexpected gem of a find. We discovered this wine while traveling through Saint-Émilion and were blown away. We tasted this along with the more renown Ausone, Angelus, and Pavie wines and it stood its ground. Amazing fruit and spice with underlying minerality, and the elegance of the mouthfeel is just pure heaven. This is a world class Merlot by any standard and should be in the most discerning of cellars.
Aromas of raspberries, a subtle hint of mint, rose petals and a subtle hint of crushed vitamin pills introduce the 2022 Mondot, a full-bodied, ample and layered wine that's pure, succulent and suave, with sweet tannins, juicy acids and a long, expansive finish. As readers may remember, the 2022 is a somewhat different beast from previous renditions, as it now incorporates some newly acquired holdings, spanning a wider variety of expositions and altitudes, and includes Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon in addition to Merlot.
Clearly the finest wine to date under the new team and direction here, the 2022 Château Troplong Mondot reveals a vivid purple hue as well as sensational notes of black raspberries, cassis, acacia flowers, and graphite, with a beautiful underpinning of chalky minerality. Medium to full-bodied on the palate, it has flawless balance, ultra-fine tannins, no hard edges, and a great, great finish. The purity, precision, and just sheer class are something to behold.
