A consistently impressive Super Tuscan wine from the Antinori family, blending top Sangiovese with Cab and Cab Franc.
Single vineyard (Tignanello) grapes were fermented in truncated conical tanks, then transferred to small French and Hungarian oak barrels where the wine was aged for 14-16 months before bottling and further aging for an additional 12 months
The Antinori family has been making fantastic wines for centuries and this is definitely one of their two major standouts (the other being Solaia). It blends some of their best Sangiovese grapes with smaller proportions of Cab and Cab Franc. It really doesn't matter what vintage it is. This Super Tuscan is consistently a beast of a wine that never ceases to amaze.
The Marchesi Antinori 2019 Tignanello was born in a classic growing season that saw some cooling summer rains and relatively stress-free conditions. This is an elegant and extremely polished wine made with mostly Sangiovese and smaller parts Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Here too, the small blending element of Cabernet Franc has been slowly increasing in recent years. The 2019 vintage was born with a good amount of power and tannic structure, and maceration times were slightly reduced as a result. This less extractive approach shapes a polished and elegant wine with plenty of bright berry fruit, cherry, dried mint, blue flower, blood orange and rusty earth. The palate is more compact and streamlined. It shows beautiful grace.
Delightfully approachable on the nose right away, with warm mocha notes and cool graphite aromas against Bing and black cherries. The palate is equally outrageously delicious and easy to love even in its unbridled youth, with more cherries, blackberries, raspberries and chocolate inside a framework of tannins made to measure and acid built like an invisible force field.
