A Malbec masterpiece from an Iconic producer.
Grapes from 2 high altitude vineyards, Angélica and Nicasia, are fermented 20% whole cluster and 80% whole berry in vertical open barriques and stainless steel, then aged 24 months in new French oak barriques, followed by 12-18 months aging in bottle before release
Catena Zapata, which was once Argentina's largest producer, now focuses on premium wines, reducing production to just over 2M bottles a year. This exquisite Malbec, one of three premium selections we carry, is a "Grand Cru" blend sourced from 100+ year old vines in two high-altitude Mendoza vineyards: Angélica (Maipú) and Nicasia (Uco Valley). The label's art tells the Malbec journey, but the wine's quality is the true story. It's a full-bodied, immensely complex wine with concentrated dark fruit, violet, graphite, and spice, showcasing velvety tannins and a profound, long finish. A benchmark for Argentine Malbec and a cellar essential.
Elegant and perfumed nose with violets, spices, fresh blackberries, blueberries and touches of chiles, chocolate, cigar box and white pepper. Super juicy on the palate with compact, fine tannins and an extremely long finish.
A worldclass wine, the 2022 ‘Argentino’ comes from vines that are more than 100 years of age. Given roughly 20% whole cluster ferentation, vines from this wine are set on a range of soils including sand, gravel, stones and clayloam. Stored in a combination of small and large format French oak barrels this delivers flavors of mocha, tar, anise and wild huckleberry that meld well with its rich, voluptuous texture and bright, underlying acidity.
