A single-vineyard Montepulciano of remarkable depth and structure.
Aged 12 months, 30% in new French oak barriques, and 70% in stainless steel
There is the Montepulciano that is a village in Tuscany that specializes in making brilliant wines from the Sangiovese grape (locally known as prugnolo gentile), and there is the Montepulciano grape variety grown in several wine regions along the eastern coast of Italy. This offering showcases the Montepulciano grape and it's about as strong a representative as we've ever tried. Usually these wines are easy drinking 5-year wines that really go well with Italian fare. This one much more than that. Produced from 70-year-old vines, the Archivio offers an intense profile of smoky dark cherry, licorice, and violets, balanced by a distinct salty minerality and firm, age-worthy tannins. This one will age well for another 2 decades. A true gem.
Intense and brooding in the glass, the 2021 Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Archivio smolders up with a blend of grilled herbs, ashen stones, menthol and dried black cherries. It possesses a core of cool-toned acidity, silky textures and masses of mineral-tinged wild berry fruits, creating a sense of pure elegance. Structured and dramatic, the 2021 leaves the palate saturated in primary concentration. Cristiana Tiberio's experience with aging Montepulciano partially in barriques is paying off—each vintage of Archivio displays more and more balance.
