Umbria has 2 DOCGs - the highest level Italian wine classification - and one is for the region's signature red grape, Sagrantino. This offering is an excellent demonstration of just how good this varietal can be. So much going on from nose to finish. Ripe plums are prevalent, but there are loads of complimentary flavors and aromas from floral notes to hints of cocoa, leather, baking spices, and a good bit of tannin. Complex and delectable.
Rich ruby red colour with a garnet rim. Intense and multi-layered nose, showing lots of ripe plums and sour cherries, then red currants, a touch of savouriness and leather. Lots of savory tannins on the palate, multi-layered as well, with a long and savoury finish.
Lovely aromatic nose, concentrated and offering depth. It reveals notes of blackberry cream, crushed purple plum and small notes of purple fig associated with a touch of candied red berries as well as a hint of chocolate and sweet spices. The palate is elegant, gourmet, delicate and offers accuracy, a tangy frame, minerality, tension as well as energy. On the palate this wine expresses notes of crème de cassis, concentrated purple plum and small notes of crushed blueberry associated with a touch of candied strawberry as well as hints of chocolate, violet and a subtle hint almost laurel (in the background). The tannins are finely tight. Presence of a subtle hint of roasting/grilled in the background. (translated)
