if you're going to carry dessert wines, you must include the hallmark of Italian sweet wines, Vin Santo. The 2015 Capezzana Vin Santo di Carmignano Riserva is a luxurious Italian dessert wine, offering a testament to the centuries-old tradition of Italian dessert winemaking. It is crafted from handpicked Trebbiano and Malvasia grapes of Carmignano, a small village nestled in the heart of Tuscany. After careful harvesting, the grapes are left to dry on straw mats in well-ventilated lofts, a process known as "appassimento." This allows the grapes to concentrate their sugars, flavors, and aromas, resulting in a remarkably intense and complex wine.
Though underscored by vibrant acidity, this distinctly sweet white displays toffee, butterscotch, walnut, orange zest and multi-grain toast aromas and flavors. Concentrated, this persists on the finish, with dried fruit, fig and date notes. Shows terrific length. Trebbiano and San Colombano.
Very powerful and sunny in nature, it shows notes of red plums, mango, papaya, sweet caramel, mixed flowers, citron pieces, chopped almonds and black tea leaves and cinchona. Full-bodied, creamy and enveloping in the sip, it shows a remarkable grace combined with a truly persistent but not cloying sweetness. Certainly among the best Italian vin santo.
