The 1855 Bordeaux Classification, established for Napoleon III's Exposition Universelle, is the definitive ranking for the Médoc sub-region's wines, with a few additions from the neighboring Graves area. This hierarchy, ranging from First to Fifth Growths, was initially based on the wines' market price and reputation at the time.
Within this framework, the term "Super Seconds" unofficially refers to Second Growths (Deuxièmes Crus) that consistently match the quality and price of the First Growths. While the classification has seen rare changes (Mouton Rothschild's elevation in 1973 being a notable exception), these exceptional Second Growths—primarily sourced from St. Estèphe, Pauillac, St. Julien, and Margaux—benefit from outstanding terroir, producing complex wines with significant aging potential.
